Five scholarship routes Nigerian students often miss

Large, famous scholarships attract enormous competition. The awards that actually change a student's budget are usually smaller, less advertised and decided by a single department.

First, departmental scholarships. Many faculties hold funds that are awarded to strong applicants who have already accepted an offer. They are rarely listed on the main scholarships page — you have to email the programme lead and ask.

Second, regional or country bursaries. Several universities offer automatic awards to students from Sub-Saharan Africa, worth between ten and fifty percent of tuition, with no separate application.

Third, early-acceptance and early-payment discounts. Paying a deposit before a stated date can reduce fees by five to ten percent. That is often larger than the merit awards students spend months chasing.

Fourth, employer and professional body sponsorship. Nigerian banks, oil-and-gas firms and professional institutes fund staff and members for relevant postgraduate study.

Fifth, research assistantships for masters students, which are common in the United States and Germany and cover tuition plus a monthly stipend in exchange for laboratory or teaching support.
